Antarctic Digital Database

License Terms

  1. Data shall be free of charge for bona-fide scientific work and for non-profit, personal use.
  2. All existing licenses shall lapse and require renewal on release of version 5 of the ADD.
  3. Data shall not be redistributed without permission.
  4. All use of the ADD in publications and web-sites must be acknowledged.
  5. Any use of these data in a commercial product requires permission.
  6. Charges may be levied for commercial use.
    1. Publication means publication in any medium, including but not confined to print, film, television and the Internet. Each license shall be for a single medium except where different media are distributed as part of a single product (e.g. a CD distributed with a book).
    2. Commercial licenses shall be for the current version of the ADD only, unless otherwise agreed.
    3. Upgrade licenses from one version to the next shall be charged at 50% of the initial license fee except where the original license was obtained before version 5, in which case the license fee will be 50% of the fee as assessed according to the guidelines below.
    4. Commercial licenses shall be for specified publication(s).
    5. Charges will vary from a minimum of £200 for maps that are a minor illustration in a larger publication to a maximum of £2000 for maps that are a major part of a publication.
    6. The charge will also reflect the likely distribution of the publication, and in the case of hard copy publications a maximum print run will be specified in the license.
    7. Charges may be waived in cases where there is a direct benefit to the Antarctic community from the publication (e.g. operating manuals). This will be decided on a case-by-case basis within 1 week of application.
  7. All fees will be used to fund enhancements to the ADD. This shall include employing staff to incorporate donated datasets and to enhance existing data, for example by using remotely sensed data to improve the georeferencing.
  8. Charges shall be levied by the Manager of the ADD and collected for use under point 6.
  9. The Executive Director of SCAR, whose decision is final, shall arbitrate disputes over the level of charging.
