The purpose of each HSM is to preserve and protect from damage and
destruction individual historic sites and monuments within the Antarctic
Treaty Area.
Each HSM must be appropriately marked with notices in English, French,
Spanish, and Russian indicating that it is scheduled for preservation in
accordance with the provisions of the Antarctic Treaty.

promontory 3 km from the Mount Erebus crash site in memory of the 257 people of
different nationalities who lost their lives when the aircraft in which they were
travelling crashed into the lower slopes of Mount Erebus, Ross Island (see SPA No.
26). The cross was erected as a mark of respect and in remembrance of those who died
in the tragedy. |
