The information is derived from the "List of Protected Areas in Antarctica" (Shears and Downie, 1997), published by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, London, and supplemented by material from Scientific Committee for Antarctic Research (SCAR) Bulletins.

Further information on protected areas, including Management Plans and maps of individual sites (with the exception of CEMP sites) can be found in the Handbook of the Antarctic Treaty System (Heap, 1994). Additions or amendments to SPAs, SSSIs and HSMs since the publication of the Handbook in 1994 are given in the final reports of subsequent ATCMs. Details of the CEMP sites can be found in the CCAMLR publication Schedule of Conservation Measures in Force 1996/97 (CCAMLR,1996).
